The Film & Video program will close at the end of the 2012-2013 academic year. A "teach out" of the second year Film and Video program will be offered from September 2012 through June 2013 for students currently enrolled and completing their first year of the program Spring 2012. No further applications are being accepted.

The following requirements must be followed by those students intending to complete the program in Spring 2013:

• Students much remain constantly enrolled in the program throughout 2013 to maintain their eligibility in the "teach out" and completion of the program with on-time graduation during spring quarter 2013 (i.e. students cannot pause and return to the program in a future quarter).
• Current first year students (first year as of Spring 2012) who are placed on academic termination anytime between 2011-2013 will be dismissed from the program without the opportunity to re-enroll.
• Any student who does not meet the program's minimum grade point in any given class will not be able to retake that class and will be dismissed from the program.
• Any student who requests an Incomplete grade during Spring 2013, or fails to complete the requirements of an Incomplete grade before Spring 2013, will be dismissed from the program.
• Current students in their second year of the program (second year as of Spring 2012) who were placed on academic termination in 2011-2012 may be re-admitted to their second year in 2012 only if they can obtain the faculty's recommendation and Dean's approval, and if they are able to effectively return and pass the remaining workload.
• Any student who dropped out voluntarily from the program, for any reason, may not return since the college will not be able to re-offer classes not completed.

Program Overview

Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree, 103 credits

• Areas of study include current technologies in audio and video production and post-production, digital imaging and animation, writing, editing, directing, and human relations.
• Job titles include audio, lighting, set, camera and/ or production technician; photojournalist, producer, director, and editor.

The Film & Video Communications Program is a two-year, A.A.S. degree program characterized by interdisciplinary teaching and cooperative educational opportunities, with an emphasis on development of technical and creative skills needed to work in an industry which is basically artistic in nature.

In October of 1992, the Film & Video Communications Program was chosen for the Region 10 Secretary's Award by the United States Department of Education. This national award is granted for outstanding professional technical programs exemplifying dynamic teaching methodologies, which prepare students for work and life in the twenty-first century.

Students who successfully complete this award-winning program master 21 competencies in these five areas: technical core, written and oral communication, critical thinking and analysis, human relations, and computations. The curriculum, faculty and staff rely heavily on the utilization of current technology and experts from the media industry. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning and for active participation in the classroom, labs and field experiences. They are encouraged to question and challenge each other and their teachers and to exercise creativity. Teaching roles are unique in that the instructors serve as facilitators of learning, as mentors, and as models, as well as lecturers and demonstrators.

Career Opportunities

This program provides training for individuals desiring employment in the television, cable television, video, film, and multimedia industries. Students who successfully complete the program will have mastered the skills necessary for entry-level employment as: sound/audio technician, lighting technician, set designer, production assistant, technical director, production manager, assistant director, associate director, floor manger, camera operator, research photojournalist, producer, director, editor, and independent video and film makers. These industries are growing very rapidly in the Pacific Northwest, particularly in the areas of cable and video production and multimedia.
