The Seattle Central Interpreter Training Program is no longer enrolling new students. The program will close no later than the end of the 2012-2013 academic year.
If you are currently enrolled in the program, please work with your advisor to register for your remaining classes. The college will continue to make every effort during the 2012-2013 academic year to ensure that you will be able to complete your program at Seattle Central or other regional colleges that offer a similar program. Program Overview
Associate of Applied Science Transfer (A.A.S.T) degree, 94 credits
- This program prepares graduates to facilitate communication between deaf and hearing people using English and American Sign Language.
- Areas of study include ASL interpretation, transliteration, comparative linguistics, survey of hearing impairment and American Deaf Culture.
- The curriculum includes skills classes, seminars, and internships, as well as general education classes related to this field.
Career Opportunities
The program is designed to prepare individuals to work as interpreters in areas such as colleges, public schools or as freelance interpreters. The curriculum provides students with a background that helps them prepare to enter work in human service areas such as vocational rehabilitation, early childhood education, and social and mental health agencies. Graduates may also find employment in theaters, libraries, companies, museums, or any other public or private arena in which deaf and hearing people interact.
