Fall Quarter 2008

HIS 112.01 U.S. Since 1865
HIS 112 is a survey of U.S. history beginning with Reconstruction following the Civil War through the U.S.’s current “pre-emptive” war in Iraq. We will focus our critical gaze upon issues of diversity, class, systems of power, globalization and the environment, as these have played out in workplaces, communities, and society at large.  How has the U.S. cultivated its dominant role in the world?  How have social justice movements struggled towards democracy?  What is the meaning of the post-Cold War period?  Will the November 2008 US elections chart a new direction?  How can we “do history,” not just read about it?

CSP 200.01 The Power of Community: Voices and Visions
Community colleges have a special relationship with their communities.  For 40 years this college and Seattle have gone through dramatic changes.  In this combined English and History program we will conduct original research focused on the multicultural nature of the college and the community. We will study visual and written texts, conduct interviews to help create oral histories, and pay special attention to the college and its relationship with African American, Asian American, and Jewish communities.  As a special library research project we will organize our research materials and the reports into a special collection so that future students will have easy access to our work.     Student assessment will take multiple forms: written research essays, recorded interviews, and the creation of a special archives collection in the library, culminating in a community presentation.
