Urbanization in Developing
 Nations

 GEG 230 - 5 CREDITS

Overview

Geography 230 emphasizes regional studies of urbanization in the developing countries where almost half of the world’s population now lives in urban settlements. It explores cities in their cultural and economic contexts, geographical patterns, and internal city structures. It discusses the problems facing these rapidly growing cities and varied policy solutions.

As a large and diverse group, Developing Countries present theoretical perspectives with conflicting views on development and urbanization. On the part of these emerging nations, this creates an overall dilemma on which path to follow for economic growth, social equity, and environmental protection concerns.

In this course, (based on the textbook) we will concentrate and explore major aspects of urbanization in developing countries as follows:

 ·         Urbanization – dimensions of urban
        growth

·         Relationship between urbanization and sustainability

·         Rural-urban migrants and migration policies

·         Characteristics and problems of the urban labor-market

·         Survival strategies of the urban poor and attempts at social changes to transform urban society

·         Housing needs, environmental problems, and the policies designed to address them

·         Urban politics that shape local and national policies
