Field Placement

Field Placement involves developing skills and knowledge while volunteering or working in a chemical dependency treatment facility or a social and human services agency.  You and your supervisor will identify 3-5 objectives that you can accomplish while completing 125 hours at your site.  My role is to assist you as needed, visit the site and meet with you and your supervisor, and facilitate completion of course requirements.  In addition to the requirements mentioned above, you will write a self evaluation, reflecting on your accomplishment of the objectives.  For CDS or SHS 199, you will also complete a resume and portfolio.

The first question students often have is "where should I do my placement?"  The answer is, it depends on what you want to accomplish.  You might start by thinking about the type of clients you would like to work with (adolescents, adults, women, homeless folks, etc.) or the setting you would like to work in (shelter, school, afterschool program, outpatient, etc.).  If you are working on your Social and Human Services degree, you can work in a wide variety of settings; if your goal is Chemical Dependency certification, you will need to complete your hours in a state licensed treatment facility.  To explore possible placements, you can look through the "green book," which lists all licensed c.d. treatment facilities, check the bulletin board outside of room 3218, go to the Cooperative Education office in room 1140 or check out the online resource directory athttp://www.ci.seattle.wa.us/crisisclinic/
