Billion People and Counting: Environment and
College
Level Math
A co-ordinated studies
course, combining ENV 150 or GEL 102 and MAT 107
10 credits, satisfies
Q and IS requirements for the AA degree.
ENV can be used
different
ways for the AA degree (science, humanities)
Pre-requisite:
2.0 or better in MAT 098
This course is fully
integrated, using mathematics to understand and solve environmental
problems.
Finish your AA degree
with the first integrated course at SCCC to apply mathematics to the
real
world!
Practical,
problem-oriented
mathematics: a great course for science majors too.
Weekly group work
projects;
weekly quizzes (no examinations!); weekly math homework sets.
Two one-day field trips
to rivers and forests to gather your own environmental data
Math topics include:
graphing, linear exponential and power functions, difference
equations,
statistics
Environmental topics
include:
Ecosystems, population, water pollution and resources, toxic waste, air
pollution, energy, etc.
Environmental
Science 150: Environmental Issues and Problems
5 credits, lecture
(no laboratory), no pre-requisites. meets only 4 days per week
(MTWTh),
Fridays off!
includes 1 mandatory
all-day field trip (usually a Saturday or Sunday)
can be used as either
a Humanities/Social Science course or a Natural Science course!
also counts as a Global
Studies course!
Topics include:
Ecosystems,
population, water pollution and resources, toxic waste, air pollution,
energy, etc.
Science 100: Introduction to Science
5 credits, lecture
(no laboratory), no pre-requisites (I eliminated the MAT
081 requirement).
meets only 4 days per week (MTWTh),
Fridays off!
includes 1 mandatory
all-day field trip (usually a Saturday or Sunday)-a cruise on
Puget Sound
2 weeks each on 5
topics: physics, chemistry, biology, geology, oceanography
designed for students who need help/refresher before
taking science classes
